DeGarmo and Young star in “Hair” in Concert Friday and Saturday in Patchogue

Having seen “Hair” both on- and off-Broadway nine times (because it never failed to move me), I’m excited the show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year; and, even more thrilled that two of its Broadway stars, Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, are performing in “Hair” in Concert, March 9-10, at the Patchogue Theatre.

With memorable tunes like “Hair,” “Aquarius,” “Good Morning Starshine” and the powerful “Let the Sunshine In,” you can get in on the peace-and-love feeling expressed in the original musical.

Also recognizable from “American Idol,” DeGarmo and Young had starred as two of the show’s leads, Sheila and Berger, succeeding the original cast members of the 2009 revival. I saw them both in the show, and found their performances to be compelling and energetic; you could really tell they were excited to be a part of the production. They remained as part of the cast until the show closed in 2010.

While the musical’s legacy – the dawning of the Age of Aquarius – will live on, DeGarmo and Young’s renditions are riveting and the music “…give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair … shining, gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen …” will stay with you, I’m sure, always.
