Summer fun begins with a road trip out east

Being a native of Nassau County, a drive out to eastern Long Island is, for me, a true escape from everyday life. As often as I can find a reason to get out there, I go. So, I’ve collected some events for me to check out, and some that might inspire you to head out there, too!

Greenport: “Palm Beach Stories.” Genre Paintings by Peter Beston. If art is your passion, you should see Beston at his talk and reception, on June 23, from 4-6 p.m., at Peconic Landing Community Center in Greenport, 1500 Brecknock Road. Presented by East End Arts, this solo exhibition (on display through Sept. 29) features painting by this artist, who is from East Quogue. The series of paintings feature the sub-tropical environment of southern Florida, and also draw on Beston’s career in film and his love of movies. Details: 631-727-0900, or eastendarts.org.

Riverhead: The Smithereens. Are you a modern-rock band lover? Noted for their hook-based approach to classic rock, The Smithereens’ songs, like “A Girl Like You,” “Blood & Roses” and “Only a Memory,” can be enjoyed on June 24, at the Suffolk Theater, 118 E. Main St. This band also has albums dedicated to modern approaches to bands like The Who and The Beatles – how neat! Catch their performance at 8 p.m. Details: 631-727-4343, or suffolktheater.com.

Bridgehampton: Antique Show and Sale. It wouldn’t be a typical event pick of mine without a chance for some shopping; so, a trip to Bridgehampton Museum, 2368 Montauk Hwy., is on the agenda for June 24 and 25. With more than 50 vendors to browse through, you’re sure to find something you must have. The vendors are set up at the museum’s Corwith House. Details: 631-537-1088, or bhmuseum.org.

Montauk: Sand Castle Contest. And, here’s a heads up about a contest (it’s held annually), taking place on Thursdays, beginning June 29 and running through Aug. 31, at Hither Hills State Park. Teams can compete to win first place in their age groups. Get your ideas ready now, so you can be someone taking home the title of first place! Details: 631-668-2554, or montaukchamber.com.
