Waddle this way to spot a seal

If the thought of being cooped up inside during these chilly months has you searching for things to get you out from under your blankets, the chance to see some seals in their natural habitat could be just the ticket for you. The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. (CRESLI) hosts two seals walks this weekend, on Jan. 7 and 8. However, if you can’t make it, the walks are being offered through May 7.

On the approximately 1.2-mile round-trip walk at Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach, you can observe these creatures as they feed, play or haul out in the sun on their favorite rocks. On Long Island, the seal species usually spotted are harbor and grey seals. But, you may catch a glimpse of other types. I suggest you bring a camera!

The walk is kid-friendly and includes discussions on seal species’ diversity, ecology, evolution and status.

And if you go, bundle up in layers and have fun, readers!
