An apple fest this Sunday keeps boredom at bay

While things like pumpkin-spiced lattes and snuggly sweaters are coveted during the fall, the season’s ripe-for-picking fruit – apples – are high on our favorites list, too! So, set your GPS for the Sherwood-Jayne Farm in East Setauket, the site for the 27th annual Apple Festival, held from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., on Sept. 25.

You can enjoy old-fashioned games, like apple relay races and tug-o-war, along with pony rides, hayrides, face-painting and apple-head doll making. Colonial craftspeople will be on-hand, as well, to demonstrate and sell their products. And since you’ll already be there, take a hike on a nature trail, visit inside the barn or take a tour of the Sherwood-Jayne House. You’ll find that the 18th century farmhouse retains its original apple orchard, where some of the trees are more than 100 years old.

It wouldn’t be an apple fest without a wide range of fall-food options. Get your bellies ready for apple pie, apple cider, apple cider donuts, homemade jams, hot dogs and popcorn. And, if you have a way with apples, there will also be an apple pie baking contest (entry deadline: Sept. 22; see website). Guess what? There will be a pie auction, too.

Let this fest be the “apple of your eye” this weekend. And if you go, have fun, readers!
